Interesting read, unfortunately most Atheist's will just put this topic under the rug, but a simple question that evolution does not need consciousness ; but since we have it , it would have originated some where

My understanding ( based on Islam) is soul is some thing which is put in a human body when its 4 month old , so God crated all the soul at beginning and put them in kind of a cold storage and when its time they are put in a baby , So this life is a test of human soul ( since its aware of its creator) ; human is a perfect mix of body and soul , a body which is is lower self always tend to move toward earth while soul demands God for its hunger ; human endeavor should be to balance these two anti forces to create harmony

On death bed the soul is returned back to God and on day of Judgment will be put back in a body to await what it has earned while its stay if life
